This is a free-hanging (cable mount) Switchcraft male XLR connector. It is a high-quality metal connector with strain relief. You might use it in conjunction with
Marshmallow DIY Phantom preamp to make a phantom powered contact mic. You would solder one end of an
XLR cable to the preamp, and the other end to this XLR connector.
When soldering a cable to this, note that the solder terminals are labelled 1, 2, and 3.
- 1: This is the ground connection and should be soldered to the outer shield of the XLR cable.
- 2: This is the hot connection and should be soldered to one of the inner conductors of the XLR cable.
- 3: This is the cold connection and should be soldered to the other inner conductor of the XLR cable.
Note that then
Marshmallow DIY Phantom preamp board has connections labeled "XLR 2" and "XLR 3" to indicate how they should be connected to the various pins of this XLR connector.
This connector also has an unlabelled solder tab. According to the standards, you should connect this tab to pin 1 by soldering a little wire between them. Some of the above images depict how the cable should be soldered on, but note that no cable is included with this product.
